Belle Chasse - West of Algiers Canal

Belle Chasse, LA

Merrick Construction hauled and placed 250,000 cy of embankment on a stretch of levee in Belle Chasse that ran 4.74 miles along the Algiers Canal.  The major items of work included clearing & grubbing, degrading of the existing levee, the removal of existing structures and utilities, the compaction of earthen embankment, stone surfacing, seeding, and the installation of a  PZ-22 sheet pile wall.  The construction of the levee was complicated due to its location in a highly industrialized area with limited access. In addition, we completed 37 modifications which directed Merrick Construction to dig out nearly 25 areas of debris.  Finally, we backfilled, seeded, and constructed ramps in all of these areas with very little disruption to the 50 businesses along Engineers Road.

Bayou Rapides Pump Station

Alexandria, LA

This project replaced the old pumping plant and box culvert that was built in the early 1930's.  The design and construction was complicated by its location, underground utilities, limited access, and the need to keep the old pumping station in operation and main line levee intact until the new station was completed.  Due to the confined area, conventional sloped excavation methods could not be used to reach the 30-foot required depth.  A braced excavation technique was used for the first time in the Vicksburgh District to accomplish this work.

Angola Drainage Improvement

West Feliciana Parish, LA

To date, this project represented Merrick Construction's largest box culvert structure to ever extend through a Mississippi River levee. Through good scheduling & cooperation with the prison, we were able to construct this project without any disruption to the prison's inmate population. Work items included the setting of 2- 42" diameter discharge lines, installed 3- 8x10 cast iron sluice gates, installed emergency bulkheads, and demolished & backfilled the old box culvert structure.  A deep water well system was designed that allowed us to place over 1,500 cy of structural concrete on this project.
